Google prides itself on being a flat organization but there are so many layers of approval, so much red tape, that it's hard to get anything done quickly. I've seen projects stalled for months because they needed sign-off from someone who was too busy to care. It's ironic that a company known for speed and agility can sometimes feel like a slow-moving behemoth. The '20% time' was great in theory, but it was hard to use effectively because of all the hoops you had to jump through. Thoughts?

20% was quite the hallmark! It did foster groundbreaking projects like Gmail and AdSense, but employees really struggled to balance core responsibilities with passion projects cuz of managerial pressures and resource constraints. It kinda revealed the broader coordination issues in Google's bottom-up structure, where decentralized autonomy was heading towards "coordination headwinds" that were slowing progress.

Imagine if Elon took over. There would be quite the shakeup. Maybe that would be too extreme but G definitely has gotten bloated. Seems like it happens to most companies in the phase after their hyper growth years.

Xoogler here. What was worst for me is how many people in high level positions had absolutely no fucking clue what they were doing. Yet they had this weird gatekeeping of roles to where if you came from any traditional corporate, you were treated like dirt. They really need to get out of their own heads.

I have a phone screen interview with AWS for the position of Systems Engineer with the Linux team early next week. I’ve been a Sys Admin for the last 4 years, and I’m not very well-versed with coding. The phone screen does have whiteboard coding, any tips on what I could do to prepare for this? I’m not sure if I can let the interviewer know I’m not too strong with coding. I do want to take up the challenge, and also find out if the role would require extensive coding though. Any tips?

GCA Questions Help

Hi everyone!
I've had 2 rounds of interviews at Google (UK) for a non-tech role in Platforms & Ecosystems (L4/L5). Recruiter told me that I've been selected for the final rounds (GCA + Leadership Interview). From his feedback, one thing they wanted me to improve on was the GCA Questions. Would anyone have any tips on how to prepare for these? I've checked some of Jeff Sipe videos online but would appreciate any support! I find GCA quite stressful...
Thx
Thanks in advance!

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?

My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at
Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.

L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.
