How did you get the interview? Very interested.
Recently interviewed with them. Had a couple brainteasers and regular case interviews. Very mental math focused. Didn't get an offer after my final round because my mental math wasn't fast enough apparently. Pays higher than a lot of firms but projects are longer on average and apparently it's super hard to get off projects once you're staffed. Wasn't a good fit for me.
@BCG1: why would you go to OW unless you are committed to financial services? No snark, genuinely curious.
For a position in NYC?
Which practice, SBB or Risk?
For NYC, risk practice
What do you want to know? I am in the risk practice.
@ow1 thanks! Mostly want to know the type of work and lifestyle. Strategy vs operational/ model building? Length of engagements? And lifestyle?
Following
@ZSA, fair point, although we have other practices, granted not as developed. It seems that OP is pretty committed to FS given the practice he/she's looking to join though.
Engagements vary quite significantly in length, but typically tend to be 10-16weeks long, with some that are longer, but not the norm. The firm is putting a lot of emphasis on work life balance but you are in consulting so there will still be long hours. As was said earlier, this is a more technical firm and it is reflected in a number of engagements. Over the past few years there has been a push in the strategy space.
Thanks @ow1, one more thing on lifestyle.... How's your Friday look like? Do you have long hours? And how about weekends? Do you have to do a lot of weekends?
Fridays are usually not too bad, again, depends on the project and how things are going. With the emphasis on work life balance there is a real attempt at keeping week ends off limits as much as possible.
Thanks Ow1; this is really helpful. Do you have insight into the Core practice which is cross-sector? I am actually looking for a break from Financial Services.
SA I assume that you mean the core consulting group which is what we call the group of "non-aligned" consultants. All consultants are in that pool until they decide to align to a practice. While in that pool, you get staffed on projects across all industries. So you could go from doing aviation to doing FS on the next project.
Is that core pool only for juniors out of college?
Yes, for the first few years, you can remain in the core until you're a senior consultant or engagement manager (pushing it)
OW1 Does one need to be aligned with a specific practice in FS, say Risk. Will there be opportunity to work on non-risk projects? Thank you.
No, within FS there is no expectation that you will align with a sub-practice (I think that this type of alignment is for principals and partners only).
Thank you OW1
