Manager to CXO is always going to be a great story coming back to consulting or staying in industry.
Imo, you should take it, unless you have family/non work reasons not to. From a work perspective, it’s a real no brainer.
Depends on your current salary I guess. I’d definitely take it. Sounds like a great equity stake opportunity and they’re fronting you 250k? Even if it fails you can boomerang to consulting with startup experience, cash in your pocket, and a big ole equity loss to write off over the next several years.
Im no accountant, but if you pay zero for equity, I don’t see how any decline in value gives you a write off. It just reduces capital gains.
I took a similar plunge. Have to assume the equity is likely worth zero but could be worth a lot. Decided as long as the base cash salary was enough I was ok to take the risk of the equity going to zero
Agree with other replies here generally. Though “I don’t mind consulting” are the key words for me. Does the startup at least excite you? If comp isn’t the issue, I would think more about whether it aligns with your career goals, values, etc. If the startup ignites something in you, then that seems like the right path IMO. Also, from what I’ve seen and heard, it’s fairly rare to get C-level offer that’s actually decent comp from a well-funded startup. If you aspire for a big next step, you’ll have to take a swing at bat at some point and this sounds like that opportunity.
Attractive, but worth asking more questions such as is the funding contingent on certain parameters (ie X% revenue growth?). Then assess feasibility of hitting those metrics. I was evaluating a similar start up offer (well funded tech) but realized it was unlikely to hit certain metrics to unlock the rest of funding capital. Basically the 3 years of runway was really like 18 months.
What is the go/no go percentage of revenue growth you’re looking for?
Join at your risk. I made the move to a startup last year from consulting just to be laid off from the start-up. I personally wouldn't do the move as it is a risky one. Early stage startups fire people on a whim.
definitely an element of high risk re layoffs- but if you’re in the c-suite you will have a bit more control / direct visibility.
Yep. CoS at a Series B startup that has done multiple RIFs and the c-suite always knows in advance
How did you find the opportunity if you don’t mind me asking? I’m at a startup now but our c-suite is entrenched / there’s no room for upwards growth so I’m looking for similar opps to switch
Honestly just through my network. I have a pretty niche/technical skillset from working prior to consulting
What is your current TC in consulting (base+ bonus)? If this cash comp is at least matching and the work excites you, people that you will work with are inspiring, driven, I would take this. Not if cash comp is below my TC. My spouse took something based on equity and the owner screwed them (there were 3-4 people who joined him) by dissolving the original corp and forming a new one so their equity became zero. The owner basically got fully free work from 3-4 people for 7-8 month (start up was soon after 9-11 and there was no comp, just equity promise so everyone working as a side job).
Really curious if you don’t mind sharing, what position within the C-Suite? I’m trying to see the more common positions Ex consultants move into within startups
What’s your YOE?
