Had a scary experience yesterday. A friend was in town and I told her I’d take her up. Winds were dicey and I should have made a no-go decision. Instead, we took off and, upon attempted landing, winds had increased to 20G29 at almost a direct crosswind (well above the 15 kt demonstrated limit of my C172). Diverted to another field, but winds were still 11G17 in a direct crosswind there, too. I gutted out an UGLY, DANGEROUS landing, but was able to bring it down safely (cont. in comments)

Took the plunge and took a 2 month break from work to finally get my PPL. No clue how I would’ve done this without the break. Passed medical, written, and already have 6 hours! I’m doing an accelerated program with a small school in California to knock this out in a few weeks. So far so good!

Looking to choose a place to fly out of for getting my PPL. Would you recommend a program based out of a controlled or uncontrolled airport? It sounds like you get more flight time out of the uncontrolled (less busy), but less experience liaising with ATC. Both options are comparable cost-wise and about the same distance from my house.

Just had my discovery flight and I’ve been wanting to go for my PPL for a while, just not sure I can justify the 15k or so investment in my current financial situation. Would it be really bad to spread my lesson over a period of a few years?
