Had someone ask me this in an interview. I thought they stopped using such questions

You are in a room with three light switches, all turned off. Each switch controls one of three light bulbs in another room, but you cannot see into the room. You can only go into the room with the light bulbs once. How do you figure out which switch controls which bulb?

According to chatgbt this is how you answer it:

To determine which switch controls which bulb, follow these steps:

Turn on the first switch and leave it on for about 5-10 minutes.
After the time has passed, turn off the first switch and turn on the second switch.
Now, immediately go into the room with the bulbs.
When you enter the room, you will observe the following:

The bulb that is on corresponds to the second switch (the one you just turned on).
The bulb that is off but warm corresponds to the first switch (the one you had on for a while).
The bulb that is off and cold corresponds to the third switch (the one that was never turned on).
This way, you can identify which switch controls each bulb.

Chat gpt for the win. Don't ask a robot a puzzle question. You will not learn how a robot thinks.

I have never had a question like that in an interview.

I appreciate that it is supposed to be like a creative problem solving thing, but oh boy would I hate getting a question like that. What I would want to respond with is I’d find a diagram or some wiring blueprint or call an electrician because why do we have lights and switches that aren’t even in view of each other.

like

That's a very weird question. Thank God I was never asked a question like that on an interview before

With our short staffing! Good luck

Turn on two and leave one off.

like

That's true. But you turn one on and then switch it off. And then switch another on and leave it

Go into the room. There will be one off, one on and one warm (the one you switched on earlier)

Was this a peer interview? I’m actually laughing at this.

I have never heard of a question like that.

I hate questions like that with a passion. It's a clear sign the interviewer has no idea what they are doing. I look for loopholes instead of trying to figure out what answer they are looking for. "I would ask a coworker to stand in the room and let me know what light turns on when I try a switch"

like

Me too... I was so glad that they stopped doing them... last time I heard something this ridiculous was in 2014

Because light bulbs are like patients? I can’t…

I tell me i would have to google the answer to this question. Lol lol

I would luck out because this was one of the challenges in the Japanese show Alice in Borderland. I would look like a genius, but I actually just watch a lot of TV.

like

I've never had a question like that! I would be worried that there was a "correct" answer that they were looking for. .

Are all the light switches on the same side/panel?
If yes, I will flip ALL three switches on at the same time/with one movement, since there were no restrictions about flipping ONLY one switch on.

Open the door then turn the lights on 😜

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?

I'm under contract for a new build in progress that won't be done until much later this year. I fully expect interest rates will be higher than what I originally estimated. I may or may not try to lock in a good rate early, but I'm planning on renting it out and this throws a bit if a wrench in my margins. I can take it financially, but wondering, If I absolutely needed to get out of buying it, what recourse do I have? Or could I go ahead, and refinance later (who knows rates at that time...)?
