I went backwards by way more than that….same title, different (smaller) organization, 30% cut.
Yes and it’s the best decision I ever made.
Work life balance. Work stress. All so much better. Worth the $ decrease.
Yes smart move
Absolutely! Thought I was crazy to go down in salary- about 10% / $20k. Even bonus target was lower . But equity was much higher AND company was way more successful which led to higher bonus payouts. Also more opportunities to get promoted at new company. Got a sign on so first two years it ended up being a wash math-wise. Then I started moving to new roles, and eventually a large promotion. Years 3-8 (now) major increase vs where I think I would have been at prior company.
I’ve heard people say they would never go down in base pay (or vacation days, that too)- but miss the big picture. Many forget to factor in bonus, maybe equity is applicable, and even 401k match- many ways someone’s total comp can increase and be better off. That minor dip in paycheck is barely noticeable
Not once in my career, have I gone backwards in compensation; however, each time the work life balance would vary
There is something I learned though: I’m responsible for boundaries around my personal life
Yes and I didn’t even notice the difference in take home pay. New company had better health care which meant things I was once paying out of my own pocket was now included in my health insurance. Best decision I’ve ever made
Yes
