What do you want to be coached on specifically? Resume review/job search advice?
Yes to both. And ideally someone with connections and credibility with hiring managers in marketing/advertising departments at Fortune 100s
I made the switch about 3 years ago when everyone was talking about the Great Resignation. The job market was different and it took me nearly 18 months to land the role at my current organization. However, I’m in a planning role on the brand side, and it’s been amazing. It’s been really challenging, I lacked a lot of hard skills required which challenged my ability and mental health. However, I was able to leverage my category expertise that was built over time on the agency side. You may not want an insights role, but that’s the logical place for strategists to jump brand side. Then look for ways to build your skills on top of those roles. The title calibration will be hard as well. I was a VP Group Director and moved to a director role. Compensation and titles are different brand side.
I increased cash take home 20%, negotiated a 30% bonus structure (dependent on personal and company performance), plus RSUs and retirement. Big bump actually. Plus, this role is more than insights. I’m still writing creative briefs, a key partner in creative development for trademark campaigns and one of the main contributors in brand strategy (specifically positionings within a portfolio of brands).
I’d considered this as well, but am instead considering B-school. It depends really what you want to do in-house (e.g. pivot departments) but your skillset should be sought after by any internal marketing team if that’s what you’re after.
Essentially I decided that a career coach wasn’t going to tell me what to do, but rather be a sparring partner, which I don’t know if I’d pay for.
I think try your luck at finding recruiters and hopefully be able to interview for roles you ultimately think you want and go from there.
Only use a coach that is recommended to you, who knows your field and has helped clients get to jobs you would want. Don’t work with anyone who says they can “place” you as headhunters don’t really exist anymore unless you’re a high level creative.
