Has anyone successfully negotiated higher pay having a competing offer in hand? I like my current situation on balance but for the pay. I am being recruited by a competitor that will likely offer 20% more cash overall (matters to me at this stage of life) and better long term benefits, and I know they are writing up an offer. I do dislike moving companies but nowhere is perfect and I think I can be successful in the new role. Thoughts on whether to bother trying for more with my current shop?

I’d say it’s a risky strategy. Just be prepared to leave if you do try to negotiate. It’s a lot of cycles and capital people use to keep you and so they might not in this environment. Also if/when you leave you should look for a higher bump up than 20%. People will look at that as a validation of what you’re being paid and not a big difference. So - if you what to use it to negotiate I wouldn’t. If you are prepared to leave, I’d share your offer and what you’re thinking through and why with trusted folks. The bigger question people will also ask is are you happy with your role and your potential at EY and what do you want to see at work besides an increase?

Thanks. Makes sense. I agree with your idea on trusted folks first but only if prepared to leave as of course word gets around if you’ve communicated you looked elsewhere.

For more junior folks I have seen them counteroffer. I always think it is too late at that point but don’t know at the partner level if they make those attempts.

I am not at EY, but curious if that’s a trend there at all? I thought they paid decently but don’t know.

You have to be prepared to leave. However, no harm in trying. I have a contrarian view to the others on this thread. If your company wants to keep you, then they’ll try. And if your company wants to hold it against you, then that tells you all you need to know about your company in terms of a long term home for you.

I’ve always felt you can negotiate, but it’s a short term move. You will have just announced to your leadership that you are mercenary and will be leaving if you get the right offer. Nothing wrong with it as a line partner but they aren’t putting you in any leadership roles.

Helpful perspective. Thanks.

Hi All, just sharing what on mind to vent it out from my system. Maybe with this I could gain some insights and inspiration.
I have been working as a data scientist since 2018 & have been the bread winner. I have neither been under a proper mentor nor with a team of peers from my field to help me out. I was alone and confused. I have never really got the chance to prove myself which makes me all the more depressed. I'm not sure what to do with my future, indecisive and low on confidence.

I received offer from two companies, MPHASIS(in Hyderabad) and Optimum Info System(as Cosultant for Shell India in Banglore). Optimum Info System offered 2.5L more CTC than Mphasis and ROLE is the same.

Which one would you opt considering that Mphasis is a bigger company(terms of employee count) than either Optimum Info System or Shell ?.

Which is a better company ?

Hi all,
I just moved here so this might be a dumb question so please don’t judge. Why does my laundry smell like pee and how can I fix it? I used a common washer and dryer in my building. Is it because of that? Is it mold? Is it the water? I air dry my workout leggings and they all smell really weird and I don’t know what to do 😔
