Amtrak is so much more convenient. You can walk into the train station 15 minutes before departure without issue. I've never had a delay of more than 30 minutes, so it's my go to for anything between DC and Boston.
I’ve done DC to NY (ultimate destination Boston) and it was fine - as others mentioned, no security. The food isn’t great but you can bring whatever you want to eat on the train. I’ve done boston to Ny a lot (and sometimes NY to Philly or Harrisburg) and while I have experienced delays, overall it’s better than flying.
As a resident of NYC having done both. I find that if this were a perfect world . Taking the Acela amtrack from DC into Penn station is the best thing to do. Your already in the city and merely have to hop on the MTA. Good luck with what ever you decide.
I would also look into the bus! Buses run frequently from union station. If you try to buy Amtrak tickets last minute they can be stupid expensive
I got caught in traffic on 95 once while riding a bus. More than doubled the travel time, and I swore I'd never ride the bus again.
For Manhattan to DC proper, Amtrak is likely the easiest.
That said, if you are starting in Brooklyn or Queens and/or are headed to NoVA, you can make a good case for a shuttle flight from LGA to DCA.
I like to take Amtrak on shorter trips, like to DC. I feel it’s more of a hassle to go to the airport. I never experienced major delays with Amtrak. Sometimes the tickets can be expensive if booked last minute.
Amtrak sucks in terms of delays, but without delays it’s fine.
Delays on Acela are MUCH rarer than on the regionals, so try to grab Acela tickets when/where you can.
Acela is nice, and if you have United club access you can use it for the Acela ckubm
I’ve experienced delays on about 10% of my trips. Downside being that the delay generally takes hours to clear, since the Northeast train lines are so overcrowded.
Yes, it’s so much better. Also, I’ve never been delayed. Interesting to see so many people apparently have.
Is there a first class or business class ride? I did that to boston once and it was really nice.
There is both. I took business and it was decent. But the real benefit is the downtown-downtown nature of it. Saved two hours in ubers, and time is my most scarce asset.
