Yes, I would absolutely bring it up. That is a pretty large gap, and unless he has far more experience, I would definitely bring this to the attention of management.
Do you know how many YOE he has? How many YOE do you have and what is the industry average for your location, YOE? That's a great place to begin. There may be things about your colleague's resume that you are not aware of.
That doesn't mean that your initial salary isn't set based off of those factors.
If you feel comfortable talking to your male colleague, I would try and find out if there's something in his experience or career path that make's him eligible for the higher salary. If you don't, or he won't share the information, I would try and negotiate a salary increase based on your market value, and save the pay gap information for your last card. Employers can get their hackles up when people ask about pay gaps and in my experience just come up with excuse after excuse. You could also throw caution to the wind and tell them you know about the gap and demand more pay though ahah.
If you’re executing on your job as well or better than him and in the same position, ask the question. But be prepared for pushback and when it comes, know who you are and what you bring - sell it.
Meanwhile, float your resume, interview and get other offers. Quietly, give your current employer a month to raise your pay. Set a meeting with your manager at that point if it hasn’t come, with an offer you intend to take in your back pocket. Ask the manager for a raise one more time without disclosing the offer. If they say no - put in your two weeks right then and there!
Nothing is more satisfying than leaving a boss that allows your situation to continue.
Well, that's palpably unfair! Bring it up to your manager and ask for an explanation. I would definitely do If I were you.
Whoa! That's a pretty sizable gap. Definitely bring it up. If they can't justify it then you're gonna have to fight for your worth. That's so unfair!
That is downright absurd to think about. 14k is a whole lot just for having a willy. Right? SMH. You should definitely bring it up
