Yup. I was honest since it seemed like an easy time for a lesson. Adults aren't always right just because they're older, math teachers make mistakes. Plus the kids got a real kick out of it!
All the time. Lol admit your human, you make mistakes, fix it, and move on
Definitely. Have the students help you out and see if they can tell you where you went wrong. Would be nice to get them to watch and let you know right away. Some of mine do that and those are the ones I enjoy teaching.
I do it so often we make a game of it. Whichever period catches the most errors gets junk food and dumb toys you'd throw away after going to Chucky cheese.
They freaking love it, it makes them pay attention, I do it on purpose now.
Or do I?
Let them see you struggle.
A math class without errors is like basketball practice without breaking a sweat.
You're not doing it right.
Perfect example to show them that everyone makes mistakes. Bonus if your student pointed it out. Also, great opportunity to tell the kids about growth mindset.
I tell them it shows why we should work in pencil!
A great teachable moment!
All the time! I praise mistakes and try to turn them into teaching moments. We are humans, not machines and even the most intelligent people make mistakes. I usually tell them I was going to fast and remind them not to do the same because they always do.
All the time. I taunt AP Calculus AB for years……and made someone mistakes (that the students caught) all the time.
Yepper, I admit it most of the time. I tell them we can learn all from each others mistakes. We are humans too.
Sometimes I do them wrong on purpose to see if they can catch my mistake. I tell them ahead of time, that I did it wrong on purpose. They are in 3rd and they wouldn't call me out on it at first. It's great when they can tell me the answer is wrong and why it's wrong. They even want to fix my mistakes.
Honestly, all the time kids love it sometimes I do it on purpose to make sure they’re actually paying attention to what I’m doing. Other times I make a mistake and I’m like I kind of just laugh it off I was like thanks good catch honestly it’s good for students to see that teachers can make mistakes too. I’m an elementary school level. That might be a little bit different but at a high school level kids get it and honestly they appreciate it for being authentic.
I’ve done both ways:
1. Play it off as if I knew I made the error so I could see if anyone would catch it
2. Admit teachers make mistakes too and compliment and congratulate the student(s) who caught the mistake
I do it. I write the wrong number or forget a sign. I remind my students that you can't always be perfect and just like I know that sometimes they miss stuff I do too. We laugh and then we move on.
I begin the school year talking about grace for each other's mistakes and being kind. So when this happens, I thank them for catching my error. Sometimes, I laugh and say "I was just checking to see if you were paying attention." We all know better, but the laugh is good and we let it be a teachable moment about "critiquing viable arguments" and respectful conversations-- and about the need to be careful with details ;-)
