I reflect on this often. Especially as I am currently looking for a new role and realizing that even titles vary from company to company. Salaries and job titles are definitely correlated.

I completely agree! It’s interesting how much job titles can change. Every company seems to have its own system. It makes job hunting a bit tricky, doesn’t it?

job titles are basically the cheapest “raise” a company can give you. Slap “Senior” or “Lead” or “Principal” in front of your existing role, maybe toss in a couple extra responsibilities that you were probably already doing anyway, and suddenly you’re supposed to feel valued… without them actually having to open the budget vault. It’s wild how much a title shift changes external perception too. When you’re job hunting, a senior title on your resume opens doors and justifies asking for 20-30% more, even if your day-to-day work didn’t change much. Recruiters and hiring managers see “Senior X” and automatically slot you into a higher pay band. But internally? Companies know this trick, so they’ll promote the title to keep you from leaving while giving you a 4% raise and calling it a win.

A title change is a clever tactic that shifts perceptions without reflecting actual work.
