I think your dollars would stretch farther in Atlanta, but don’t be fooled , Atlanta can be high as well. It just depends where in ga you land. The farther you go away from the city of ATL the better it is on price.
I’m mostly remote and would occasionally have to commute to Midtown, maybe once every quarter.
I moved from Nashville to ATL and felt a quality of life bump. More to do and generally more affordable. Similar family size and HHI, we chose City of Decatur, great schools, Daycare was in the $1.8k range, easy commute into the city and to the airport, always some kind of activity, extremely walkable (we hardly ever have to use the car - our kid walks to school as do a large portion of students). We generally stay "within the perimeter" (i-285).
I think you may get tuition assistance if you need it, but I don't think at $300k+ you'd qualify. And yes, there are light rail lines that go from Decatur to the airport (requiring 1 change at "Five Points" station). Avondale, Decatur, and East Lake stations are all in Decatur (well technically East Lake sits right over the border, but it still counts ).
Not a good reason to move to atl, would suggest moving to one of the burbs in Chicago
Not necessarily, some have already been remodeled/refurbished and being sold at a reasonable price point. Can’t speak to daycares, I assume roughly the same between atl and chi burbs.
I personally would not want to live in the northern Atlanta burbs if I was commuting in town or if I needed to go to the airport frequently but some people don’t mind it. But living in town is quite expensive. I live in an intown neighborhood with good public schools and a 20-30 min commute depending on traffic but a 4/3 is going to be at least $1.3M and 1.5M++ if you want something renovated and nice. Also my kids daycare is almost $2400 a month for each kid.
Thanks for your reply. I’d stick to the burbs since that would fit our HHI/budget better.
Yes, and Yes :) highly recommend. DM me with any questions. Suburb: Alpharetta. Daycare for one: $1.7k
DM’d
I was paying $3k for a similar condo in midtown Atlanta. It isn't nearly as walkable of a city beyond Midtown though. I wouldn't move here from Chicago without coming to visit a few times. Weather is definitely better here, but I think Chicago is a better city.
Thank you for your reply! We would certainly visit before deciding. I understand the trade off, I currently live in the city but realistically would be moving out to the suburbs here, so if I’m going to live in the burbs, why not pay less and get a bigger home? We’re used to heat/humidity having lived in FL and AR previously.
Larger cities are naturally higher cost of living. While the cost of living is lower in Georgia, salaries will also be lower. I'd recommend Kennesaw, Marietta, Acworth areas in the northwest part of ATL. Outside the 285 perimeter will be less expensive that inside the perimeter.
Good luck getting to midtown from those locations in rush hour in less than a hour or more - even in toll lanes.
I can't help with the daycare part, but I moved from NYC, and tax savings were massive. I also ended up with a significantly larger home for the same dollars. I think you already mentioned these locations, but I'd suggest John's Creek/Alpharetta as well. Great schools and nice area. My kids (preteen and teen) made the transition to GA schools without incident and are quite happy.
If you’re going to the airport and don’t need to be in the city much, also consider the southern burbs like Peachtree City.
Also, the allergies here are awful. Like, I have issued year-around with them and it’s known to be bad. But everything else I love here and you’ll enjoy the outdoors more 🤗
We’re both ok from an allergies perspective!
Roswell and Alpharetta are both awesome. Some parts of Sandy Springs. Consider your commute needs and airport time when making final decision.
E1 from where? And then from the airport back?
Thank you for your reply! It sounds like it was the right move for you & your family and it very much sounds like it could be for mine as well!
Have you considered moving to Pittsburgh? Much lower cost of living, less expensive housing than Chicago or ATL.
Wouldn’t work for our jobs unfortunately
