Hello!
I need some advice please. I have been with my organization (bank) for 15 years. I have an external offer from another bank which pays the same as what I make now. Should I take it just for broadening my exposure in the industry? I know there is no financial gain in the short term, but would it be good for my career in the long term to have experience at two different organizations vs continuing to work in the same?

Can you negotiate the second offer so it offers something more? At least a small salary increase, or signing bonus or ability to work remotely? Increased retirement contribution? I do think there's value in having more than one experience to protect your career, but would recommend making it worth your while financially, too, even if by a margin. It will broaden your network. Congrats on the offer!

like

I agree to this! Ask for more!

like

I agree with the others, there should be some other benefit to accepting that offer. If you want to diversify your experience and they won’t budge, continue your search and make your salary requirements known up front. Just curious, was that not discussed in the beginning?

like

Do not undervalue your worth. The fact that you have an offer and a secure job, this is your opportunity to negotiate. You can choose whatever you’re comfortable with but you should never leave a role unless it’s toxic or doesn’t have the benefits you need and want for less than a 15-27% increase depending on the COL of your market.

If you need help wording this I’m happy to share some options that have always allowed me to negotiate an offer above the budget.

Also, if you feel grounded in your current role, you can use the offer to negotiate your current company however you will have to be ready to move out if they don’t negotiate with you.

like

Could you please help share some tips on salary negotiation? I am in that process now.

Would you be starting over with PTO, vested retirement, etc? Might not be worth it...

like

Benefits are usually based on time with the company so you will lose tenure which could also impact opportunity such as shift bids etc. if you like where you’re at and the people you work with that is a big gift in itself. If you don’t, then it might be worth moving on.

like

There needs to be something more that makes you do the shift, otherwise, it’s not worth it. Losing out your 15 y/o network and possibly ease of working in a familiar environment needs to have a price.

Hey FishBowl Friends, so I’m currently trying to break into tech sales/FinTech and I feel that due to my previous work history, I might not look like the ideal candidate on paper but I’m an extremely fast learner and very coachable. I’ve been a manger at a gym, got my degree in finance, worked as a client advisor at a top 3 auto dealer in the nation and now I’m a project manager at a solar company. I really want something that’s remote and steady, any recommendations on how to spruce myself up?
