HELP! I recently left an ID job where billable hours were high, pay was low, and business development was not supported. Came to work for a solo for more pay, WAY fewer hours, and a stated intent to grow his firm and support me building my own book. Been here for 2 months and I have never been so MICRO-MANAGED in my life! 😮 I am a 10 year lawyer, 7 in litigation. (Cont'd in comments)

It might help if you try to gain some perspective in that micromanagement might have nothing to do with you and your ability to perform, but is a result of the solo getting used to not doing everything by themselves exactly the way they like it. Also - in my experience a good chunk of markups tend to be related to the preference of whatever partner I’m working with versus something substantive / anything I was doing incorrectly.

In another month or two, it may be easier for them to feel aligned with you and feel less of a need to “fix” things the way they like best/have always done it.

I 100% think this is the issue. And I thought I'd wait it out too, but it seems to be getting worse. I worked on 4 separate teams at my ID firm. I completely understand differing priorities/expectations and adjusting accordingly. And even a certain amount of deference because, hey, he's the guy whose name is on the door and the letterhead and who signs my paycheck. But I'm feeling like we'll never reach the point you're talking about unless I become a clone of him. 😒

There is a reason some lawyers are solos - it is because they do not work well with others.

This. And I'm a solo.

I can, and do, work with others -- including in supervisory roles. I definitely work hard to keep my preferences in check, but it is hard.

And, compared to others, I'm a pretty chill solo to work with. Yet I believe that I work best as a solo.

Have you tried to discuss these matters with your boss? Honestly, I'd be happy to chat with him if you want to DM me.

I'd tell him that he needs to step away back and take a bird's eye view of the matters you are handling.
Are you starting fires?
Are you networking fires, floods, and other natural disasters?
If not (and I'm sure you are not), he needs to let you breathe

Bonus: If he can back off, he may reap some great benefits:
1. Getting great help from you.
2. Getting new ideas/perspectives from you.
3. Building trust with you so that you might even come to him for ideas and collaboration.

I do love it when we all win!

I'm not going to say I'm the best lawyer out there, but I have worked with enough people to know I do not suck at my job. This man re-writes every single thing I write, from briefs to motions to correspondence. He literally sends me fully typed out emails and says "you should send this." I've bounced back & forth between practice areas so I don't really feel like I can jump ship after 2 months without raising red flags. How do I politely say back the f off and let me do the job you hired me for without getting fired?? 😬

Hun, yes you can. As another 10+ year attorney, this would drive me to a forced sabbatical. I'd have a talk with him (nicely), and if it doesn't change, I'd leave.

Also depends upon age of partner and yes as started above how he or she is used to having things done and not being used to relying on anyone. How long have they been a solo. Maybe ask how can u help alleviate the extra work from their plate so that they can work ON the business growth instead of IN the business minutia.

That, as I understood it, was the whole point of hiring me. It's pretty much exactly what we discussed through the interview process. But he won't even let me send a m & c letter about some stupid discovery issues without a full re-write! And the re-write is bad. Like, 8 extra words and 10 commas in one sentence just to say the exact same thing. I sent an email yesterday to opposing counsel and he called me 5 min later to tell me how he wouldn't have said that, then emailed me a typed out response to copy/paste for the next email. Then emailed me again 40 min later to say oh nevermind, don't send that.

Just have a conversation with him.

I'm also a 10 year woman lawyer in ID - are you able to private message on this thing? I would be happy to connect as I have been on the job search myself.

For questions as to why you are looking to leave your current firm.. I am looking to move because for some reason I am hand-held a lot and given simpler tasks, so I am getting bored and want more challenging / much more fast paced environment. Also kind of bored because I am on one project for a long time and I want exposure to variety of projects. Is this a fair answer or would I be seen as arrogant? Is there a better way to frame my answer?
