My resume isn't even getting seen despite putting the right keywords
Right!! I think there's alot of nepotism going on tho 😭
Because a lot of qualified or overqualified people are applying for the same positions
Let me be clear, I did not say whoever makes blanket accusations IS unintelligent, I said it makes them come across as unintelligent. My intent was not to offend anyone, rather to encourage people to push themselves more, to have/develop inquisitive minds, read more, question more, generate more information and knowledge and thus, more wisdom...this is what keeps us moving forward as a species and a country. "You HAVE to love to learn. " Dr. Sinks.
I do appreciate the back-and-forth conversation on this topic as well. It is hard to find people who have differencing of opinions but are willing to respectfully listen and try to understand each other's perspective. People these days are too married to an idea, or concept, or label, which renders them incapable divorcing themselves from whatever school of thought they initially subscribe to, to listen, learn and conversate with those holding opposing viewpoints. Which in my mind is tragic, because learning the "other side" creates understanding, brings awareness, and cultivates knowledge. "One can never completely understand his side, until he understands the opposing side more." Professor Schneider.
FYI...the job market feels broken because it is stuck in a "low-hire, low-fire" cycle. Or what Economists call a "frozen economy." Companies are holding onto their existing staff but freezing new hiring, making the search process incredibly frustrating for active job seekers.
Several major factors are causing this bottleneck:
• The Rise of AI and Automation: Companies are increasingly relying on AI tools, automated resume screeners, and AI interviewers to filter applicants. This tech-first approach has also led many employers to automate cognitive and entry-level tasks, leaving fewer roles for junior candidates, also, requiring the applicant reviewrs to review an overwhelming amount of applications than previously.
• "Ghost Jobs" and Cautious Hiring: Many companies post fake or placeholder jobs ("ghost jobs") to appease overworked employees, create an illusion of growth for investors, or keep talent pools warm without any actual intention of hiring. Coupled with macroeconomic uncertainty, businesses are incredibly slow to finalize hiring decisions.
• Post-Pandemic Over-Correction: During the tech and corporate boom of 2021–2022, many companies massively over-hired. Over the past couple of years, industries have been "right-sizing," restructuring, and eliminating duplicative roles, which has flooded the market with experienced professionals.
Navigating this market takes time, as finding a role is heavily dependent on direct referrals and overcoming automated screening algorithms.
Best of luck to everyone! Maybe next time, try to educate yourselves on is REALLY happening, READ! INQUIRE! Instead of accusing companies, of which I am assuming you have no real knowledge as to their hiring practices, of "nepotism," Jsu a suggestion. Thank you for reading this!
I have educated myself, read, and inquired—that’s exactly why I disagree.
I’ve spoken directly with recruiters, hiring managers, and HR. I’ve interviewed for positions where I met the qualifications, had relevant experience, and was told another candidate was selected, only to watch the exact same position get reposted later.
I’m not claiming every company practices nepotism. What I’m saying is that job seekers often have far less visibility into hiring decisions than companies do. The explanation isn’t always “someone better got the job.” Sometimes it’s internal candidates, changing budgets, hiring freezes, role restructuring, preference for a specific personality fit, or decisions that applicants are never made aware of.
It’s also ironic to tell applicants they have “no real knowledge” of hiring practices when candidates are usually given almost no information about why they were rejected in the first place.
People aren’t accusing companies out of thin air. Many are drawing conclusions from their own experiences after hundreds of applications, interviews, rejections, and seeing positions repeatedly reposted.
Respectfully, I think both things can be true: job seekers should educate themselves, and companies should be more transparent about their hiring practices.
Thank you for your response.
I agree with your statement that, "...[J]ob seekers often have far less visibility into hiring decisions than companies do. The explanation isn’t always “someone better got the job.” Sometimes it’s internal candidates, changing budgets, hiring freezes, role restructuring, preference for a specific personality fit, or decisions that applicants are never made aware of." I would add that often times applicants never hear ANYTHING from an interviewer, let alone an explanation. Which, in my humble opinion, is just plain bad manners!
Additionally, I apologize if I came across as critical. I was trying to offer some objective and hard facts (as opposed to personal experience) to help readers understand why and how to job market is at a stand-still.
Last, my question/response to your statement that, "It’s also ironic to tell applicants they have “no real knowledge” of hiring practices when candidates are usually given almost no information about why they were rejected in the first place." Is how is this ironic? If applicants can't even get an explanation for denying them during the initial interview process, HOW could they might have any insight into what a company's hiring practices are? My comment regarding applicant's knowledge of hiring practices was to simply highlight the fact that stating companies are engaged in nepotism without providing evidence as to HOW you (or anyone makes similar claims) know this fact to be true, makes you (or whoever makes similar blanket accusations) sound unintelligent. (Again, I am not trying to offend you, just stating the hard truth.)
I hear your point about applicants not having visibility into internal hiring decisions, and I agree—that’s a real limitation.
My “ironic” comment wasn’t meant to imply applicants have more insight than companies. I was highlighting the information gap on the applicant side, which naturally leads to uncertainty in how outcomes are interpreted.
On nepotism/bias, I agree it shouldn’t be stated as fact without clear evidence tied to a specific case. More often, what people are describing are perceived patterns based on personal experience, not something that can be broadly attributed to a company.
This in my personal opinion is mostly a difference in perspective based on access to information, not intent or intelligence.
Also no worries on my end—I do value the back-and-forth on this topic.
