1. Donât start with slides, storyboard your key messages first (I.e work out the key message on each page)
2. Read Barbara Mintoâs Pyramid Principle (or an online summary of it). Learn how to structure / group your ideas logically.
3. For proposals, ask yourself âwhy would a client want to hire usâ and if your answer is âwe have awesome people and experienceâ, think again. Yes that is a consideration, but every other firm pitching for the work will say the same thing. Really understand the problem and demonstrate your experience by offering a unique approach to solving the clientâs needs.
What are some ways/ techniques to âreally understand the problemâ background literature etc? Sometimes writing stuff outside your own SME makes it hard to navigate the messaging

Also came from industry; core to my struggle was generalising to allow clients to first see themselves in what I was pitching before tailoring. I found in industry we were trained to be snipers; where in consulting itâs better rewarded to cast a net.
What worked for me; think fast, but talk slow. Phrase suggested approaches in an open way that allows the client space to shape the solution. Good luck! The transition is not easy but how good are the rewards!?
I more so struggle with writing proposals and general look and feel of PowerPoint packs I think client wise itâs been ok to work through conversations etc
Yeah I came from industry as well, found my first 6 months super hard. For me it was the being the expert part, I knew they stuff but wouldnât call myself an expert so found it to be a daunting experience putting that confident face on!
