It does sound like the waters are getting muddy in terms of what exactly they want you to do. The ‘less pushy’ is also similar to things I’ve had happen, and rarely a huge deal. Somebody just wanted to throw their weight around. If the money isn’t there and it’s a temp job, get the experience and what you can, and look elsewhere.
That is the hard part. I did have a short stint at one place years ago. When it came up in the interview, I just tried to be honest (professionally) that it wasn’t going to be a good long-term fit for my skills or career goals. Then talk about what I was able to do there and focus on why this new role is a perfect fit for all of those things.
I do EA plus already in another dept so I see where he got that idea I guess? So there was an email chain with another colleague my exec needs an answer on. I asked politely for update twice, no response. Probably busy. Ok. So I email again “Hey xyz person, any update here?” And my execs boss emails me saying that the phrase “any update here” is not well received and I should write less pushy messages.
I would also feel policed and uncomfortable. I wouldn’t leave without another job lined up, but that along with everything you previously mentioned would certainly have me looking for a new opportunity.
