I had a similar story, when I pivoted into advertising in the U.S., I was being interviewed for both director and junior roles, lol. (Also, not originally from U.S.)
Not saying this is what you need to do, but this is what I did:
- Portfolio school for networking (mostly) and “credibility”
- Got into a very good agency quickly in a role that on paper had much lower status, but people who hired me knew that they’re getting “a deal.”
I was also always straightforward when interviewing that I understand while I bring much more to the table, most likely I won’t get the role I want right away because I don’t have exact 100% U.S. experience match they want
- Moved on from that role quickly into a position that reflects my experience much better
TL;DR
Letting go of ego and getting quickly into a good shop at a more junior role that you want
Network non-stop to increase chances of both
Miami ad school
For me it worked, and I’ve heard other “success” stories, but also many people didn’t get what they wanted
It does help with networking for sure
My advice would be to highlight your international experience as a strength. The global perspective is valuable, especially for companies with international clients or a global strategy. Maybe aim for a role that values versatility, even if it's not strictly "junior" or "senior."
there are lots of midlevel senior strategist opportunities between those two things
