Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

I highly recommend going somewhere that will mentor you through the transition. I know that sounds dumb but based on your title you are senior and have been in social for a while --- it can create a bit of personal resistance. "I've always done x why do they keep asking for y." Also, there is a bunch of "secret sauce," that isn't the easiest to learn. Most of the steps are the same but the output looks very different.
I’d suggest seeing what opportunities you have to flex creative/brand strategy muscles wherever you’re at. On leaner accounts, someone may be willing to let you play both, with oversight. Learning to look at at an ask from the perspective of the 4 C’s and write a solid GET TO BY (BECAUSE) are key foundations for making the shift.
One other difference...in social it's more common to hear "I'm not the expert here...I defer to you." I have yet to meet someone in this industry who believes their brand strategy knowledge is lacking and is unsure about their opinions on the topic. Brand strategy entails a lot more debate, persuasion and conflict to the extent that affects your decision
Good answer
Considerably more difficult work, but considerably more rewarding.
Take the Mark Ritson Mini-MBA courses. They are explicitly designed for people looking to make this jump. I took them both and couldn't possibly recommend them more highly.
You need to learn the fundamentals of what works and why, as opposed to platform tricks and tips and trends.
