Hi

Is $18 an hour for entry level support IT a good pay even though you have less than one year of experience working in support and a bachelor in IT?

My opinion would be the same it is a bit low. However, in the current job market if this was me I would take this job being fresh out of college and then I would continue to look for another job after a couple of months so this way you will gain some experience in the industry which will be valuable in your next job.

like

Take it and keep looking. It’s always easier to find a job if you have a job.

like

I actually think it depends on where you are working. $18 an hour in a giant city like New York or L.A., seems a bit low but if you are working in a smaller or medium city in the Midwest or something, an $18 an hour starting salary sounds pretty reasonable.

I was really excited about about a job I aced an interview for. However, today my offer letter was made the company starts off at 19.80 an hour and with a IT diploma and two years of tech experience and solid work history they offered 15.00 and said after my training I can get the 19.00 hr. I’m about to waste their time like they wasted mine making me believe I would get a good entry level paying job. She told me because of my experience they can start me at 15 hr. THIS IS WHY COMPANIES CAN’T GET EMPLOYEES OR EVEN KEEP THEM!

like

$15 is min wage..

like

That seems a little low. I got paid $14.30/hr 10 years ago as my first out of college IT job.

But it also depends where you are in the world. I was on the West Coast USA

like

Ten years ago money was very cheap and every tech company paid a lot. Now that tech companies have to be conservative like every other company, wages go down to “normal” rates.

like

I'm going to echo everyone else and say yes! That is low. I would say for an IT support position you should make at least $25/hour even for an entry level role.

like

Times were hard (ie, 2000, 2009-2011, and now), and the pay will be low. But, you will climb if you keep learning & growing.

Within a year, I went from $10/hr to a $42K salaried position. I started my career in 2000, and settled for a $10/hr tech support position to gain more experience (working alongside peers who didn’t have a degree). You can imagine the hazing I received for having a degree and failing to secure something better.

After 6 months, and I was able to secure a 2-week contract position for $15/hr. I took the gamble and went for it. Biggest lesson learned after all of these years… positive attitude pays off; while my peers complained about the low pay, I stood out as the happiest guy on the team…which led me to a 3 month extension, and an offer as a FT position ($34K salary). My luck didn’t stop there, as I secured a $42K salary for one the biggest sports apparel company.

Stay strong and finish strong. Good luck out there!!

I feel inspired by your story. Hoping to get there soon. (:

Sometimes you do what you have to do. My first job as a software engineer for a 10 person startup paid me minimum wage to start, but I could only go up from there.

like

It's decent. Stay away from desktop support as soon as you can

like

I thought after you get an bs in IT entry level job consists of support so i went there. What do you recommend or think are the entry level jobs?

like

Not too bad but could be better. The more important things are the rate of growth & promotions or raises, this is what you should focus on in the long term.

like

I don't think so.... No matter your experience

like

More than 10 years ago, I was offered an IT support role at the university I was attending for 20/hr.

like

Your exp?

This one truly depends on your location.

For entry level position with like no experience I guess it's fair.

But And I don't honestly if you have some certifications are a degree 20 doesn't sound unattainable

like

I would focus on more of a network admin type of roles instead of tech support roles, work towards that, get stretched in that area as much as you can. Also start building your stories with STAR answers so when you interview, you can show how you delivered value. Look at places that not only have decent pay but upward mobility to grow your career. Ask for LinkedIn recommendations.

like

No that’s pretty low. $22

I also live in MD and have worked IT support for a few years.
I can say from experience while a bachelors is great, most companies are looking for certifications and actual demonstrable skills.
If you have less than a year of experience and no certifications then $18/hourly is fair for L1 help desk type work, but not great.
My last support position I was making a little over $20/hourly with 2+ years of IT support experience.
If you like the sound of the job and the company I say take the job.
You can always keep looking for something that pays better in the meantime.

like

I started at $32.30… entry level

Where are you located? How much Experience did you have?

Depends on location and if you want experience. I ate a lot of baloney sandwiches initially to get experience then get some certs. After a couple of years you should get 20-25 hr

These numbers for IT surprise me! The budget grocery store chain in my part of LA was hiring cashiers at $20/hr. I don't even think they require a college degree, since many of them are still students. Maybe the pandemic pushed cashier wages up.

Anyway, just wanted to echo the good advice you've already been given. If the rate is low for your area or your goals, don't stay in that role long.

In the future, when you have some savings and experience, it's okay to hold out for the right company/job/pay. Don't leave money on the table!

Not bad

This should be base off your location first due to income cost, then your experience.
West cost is 25-31/hr
East cost I’ve seen at 20-28/hr
