A super bowl commercial does not put you among the greats. I have a super bowl commercial. You want to know my best work?
A campaign for a mining machinery manufacturer
A campaign for a trades council
A campaign for a local brewery that only sells in 3 states
A rebrand for the financial times
Going into all of those, I wouldn't have thunk it
you wouldn’t be among “the greats” and you probably wouldn’t even be let into the room where these are made. Super Bo*l spots are no longer the pinnacle of creativity in our industry. they’re projects run by gatekeeping hacks who lead departments while turning a blind eye to every other project happening under them. push the work at your shop because it’s all the fucking same.
Trust me, you're better off working in smaller agencies. If you care about a WLB. If you're at that point in life where you'd rather get more done and don't care to sacrifice hours of your own time, and time that could be spent on personal passion, then these agencies are for you. At least that's been my experience with it.
Start by identifying the creatives who are making the type of work you want to make. Reach out to them and open a conversation. If you really have the hunger, and keep at it, you’ll get a shot.
