It’s not just common in agencies, it’s standard. Choice projects go to the favorites, tough/boring projects go to everyone else. Favoritism toward the cool dude bros over the professional women or introverted men has happened more often than I can count.
I'm an introverted woman 💀
I had a new head of creative try to fire me to hire some of his “people”. He had already fired/demoted others. But, I was the most requested Art Director from account/strategy, so he couldn’t 🤷🏻♂️. The head of resourcing told me. So yeah, it happens.
Favoritism is so bad at my agency it got called out during an all-agency meeting. Nothing changed.
Favoritism is the water we swim in.
I feel like favoritism is pretty common in the workplace, sometimes its deliberate and other times your manager has subconscious favorites. Usually I don't let it get to me and I just try to focus on my own work, but sometimes it can affect you when you're constantly being passed over for opportunities that are being given to the same people.
Favoritism is shown to those who are more outwardly extroverted
Oh it is VERY common. At my job if you are not part of the inner circle you can forget ever getting a promotion or raise. They have their picks and that is that. And unfortunately I am not going to worship the ground someone walks on in order to get in their good graces.
Hmmm in hindsight, I’ve been guilty of playing favorites: but let me reframe it as “comfort and safety”. Perhaps even playing to the strengths/ maybe even typecasting teams….I know that a certain team will perform better on higher profile assignments, or on comedy, etc…. So maybe not giving the comedy assignment (no matter how much they may want it) it to the team that’s not funny is a form of favoritism, but that same team gets the brief for a strength that I trust them to excel in.
I didn’t say I haven’t but would you prefer a dust jacket with my full biography?
On the timeframes we’re given you play to peoples strengths and help them succeed.
It’s human nature but it should be an impulse we try our best to resist not one we indulge at every turn. At my last place they didn’t even try to hide it and when layoffs came, sure enough, the favorites were favored.
