Have you ever noticed some people get A and the next year they have A+B while most get A and that’s it. Those are sterile generators. Truth is, if you do not focus on the generators, you are constantly struggling for growth. But lawyers are notoriously bad at business which is based on risk taking and management. Law is about avoidance of risk. My advice would be, out of 14, you probably have 2 or 3 generators, focus on them if you want success.
The problem is we are a top heavy firm. 10 of the attorneys are equity partners. I am one of the top if not the top revenue generating partners. But I also have the most files at the firm, albeit I partner with other attorneys on a good deal. We have other partners who have a mere fraction of my work but are taking in way too much money for their contribution. They blame it on file distribution and not being given a share of the files. They are not necessarily wrong. But despite my revenue generation and my file load, I am not the partner that is the source of the issue. I would be happy to give up some of my work if it meant that everyone was working equally as hard. We just need a process for doing it.
