Start another firm, grow very large, and be acquired

Become a rainmaking equity partner, and then (1) leave, become the best President since FDR or Reagan, and come back to law firm or (2) die tragically stopping the next 9/11.
Honestly best move is to make equity partner then legally change your name to match the firm. Great for BD.
Hostile takeover.
If you are at a V5 you have to be at the right rank at the right time and on the right matter(s) (which is all market dependent). You will need two or more influential partners to vouch for you. You will serve institutional clients so there is no book required to initially make partner. This process is also very bureaucratic rather than truly meritocratic, and the latter is what they would like you to believe. As such, you can literally be a stellar associate and try as hard as you want but without the right internal connections it will not happen.
Most people drop down in ranking to make partner because, although it can be political as well, it is a far more entrepreneurial environment where if you put in the work you will have a more realistic chance to own you own book.
I also think if you can’t at least do what I said above you’ll certainly never be a name partner lol

Pls fix.
Become an Assistant US Attorney General, then Mayor of NYC. Join a big firm using your name recognition. Pledge fealty to an insane Presidential candidate. Go insane yourself. Have your name removed “amicably” from that firm.
Become a supreme court justice. Retire from court and return to firm.
Stand up and ask during your managing partner’s address at the next firm AGM.
