You work at Kirkland?
Use timed emails so the people receive them only during business hours
Disagree, at least for internal emails - I’d send in the middle of the night on purpose. I think it excuses potential non-responsiveness at other times of day. I wouldn’t email a client in the middle of the night.

I do it. The bonus is that people think you’re going way above and beyond

Idc tbh. A whole host of possible reasons why you could be working at any given time. I send emails at the time that I happen to be working at any time of day.
Just use delayed send so it arrives at 8 am or something. Whenever o sent emails between 2 and 6 am I’ve had to explain to partners why it couldn’t wait until the morning and they would not staff me on files for weeks to “give me a break and prevent burnout”. So just screwed me for hours in the end and no one is impressed at 3 am emails
No. I do this too. Most people don't really notice the timestamps. I also don't personally care what they think.

You’d look nuts to me but you do you.
Yeah it’s annoying af. Use delay send.

My only concern with sending things in the middle of the night is people missing them (ie they see it when they wake up and forget to deal with it when they actually start to work). So I usually have to follow up on stuff sent late at night
I do that. It’s been mentioned to me once or twice. No one has ever criticised me for it.
Often, it’s a reason partners ask if I have too many matters or a reason they find it hard to deny my requests for time off. If they ask why I’m working so late, I tell them I find it easier or work better that way.
I wouldn’t, in normal course, email clients at that time though.
Yes you look crazy. Use delayed delivery.

U look like u can’t get your work done during business hours which isn’t a good look
How many attorneys actually get their work done during business hours? (I.e. 8-5)
Don’t do this. Working at 3am shouldn’t be normal, and although it works for you, it puts pressure on others (particularly juniors) to be working late too. Also this is not some kind of power move or flex, it seems a bit attention seeking to be sending emails at this time - even if not intended to be.
For internal emails, as the various comments here suggest, I think it really depends on your team and the culture of your firm.
I’ve set expectations at my company that I take time during the day to hang with my kids and do hobbies (ski, climb, run) and will sometimes be gone for a couple hours at a stretch, but that I get all my solo work done at night and that I never expect responses to emails I send after 5. (My best hours are from 9-12 at night).

I use delayed delivery because an email with an unusual time stamp just makes me think the person is flexing and wants attention, or has poor time management, and either way I think less of that person going forward. Delayed delivery takes 5 seconds to set up.

But then I always feel like I have to check to make sure it went out in the morning
I do this because my delayed send has never worked (def not seeking attention lol). No idea people hated this so much. Any tips for getting it to go through?

Great question for your assistant, or IT
Coach
Yes
I do it, and it’s a power move according to an old partner I used to work for lol. I kinda believe him.
No joke—when I’m sending opposing counsel or clients email past 12:00 am (and especially past 2:00 am) they somehow respond in the morning immediately, almost always. Especially if it’s a well written email.
Coach
No. I don’t think anyone cares.
