I don't think that you have to see them as opposites of each other. Being thankful for what you do have and also what you don't have is a posture and foundation to live by. Asking for opportunity and favor doesn't have to come out of ungratefulness, which I assume is the actual struggle. What is hard is being in alignment with God's plan and opportunity and ours. That alignment is a product of tuning ourselves to Christ, exuding from being in the Word, conversing in prayer, and seeking the accountability of the body through fellowship. Humility is also a posture. A state of understanding that our sin condemns us, we don't deserve anything. Yet grace has been freely given as a favor to us because God loves us. And God loves us because He loves us. Our humility then is not what brings favor to our lives. It's amazingly God's grace towards us that brings favor. We therefore can be humble knowing that we are loved regardless of what we deserve: death.
Point is, we can be both humble yet favored. Thankful yet offered opportunity to participate in the work the God is doing in and around our lives.
