Personally I focused on the market rate for the title, scope, location and business size. I make sure to share my appreciation and excitement for the role, note my experience and value prop in skills and share what I think would be realistic. It’s less of a demand and more of a conversation. I’ll usually go over what I actually want (10k over ideal salary) so when they go back and offer 5-10k less I’m pretty happy with the result.
When thinking about that negotiation and what I propose, I ask myself if the counteroffer is reasonable and professional. Not doing your research and acting as if it’s a demand will be where you have an issue.
I think a good strategy is to provide a range, maybe 5-10K above your minimum desired salary. Instead of a set number say something like 80,000-85,000 (for example) when you would secretly settle for 75-80K. They will likely low ball you so choose carefully. If you start too low then you might get less than would you expect. Also, I agree with doing your research, know market salary range for your region and skills. Sometimes if a recruiter has another qualified candidate they may choose them instead if their minimum salary is lower. Let them know you’re willing to discuss to see what’a good for both you and the employer.
