Always good to see if you can propose a solution that will satisfy the but not significantly derail you. If that’s just not possible, then let them know why it will be an issue and how it would affect budget/schedule. No one wants to hear a flat out “no, we can’t do that” Eithee way, make sure you’ve given it a good amount of thought rather than a knee jerk “No.”
Always try to find a way to yes. They want to know you tried. Present the cost and timing. It’s someone else’s call if it’s worth it or not.
Internal team or client?
I don’t really care. If the client loves it, the job description is to keep them happy. If it costs more you just price it out. If they want to pay more, it’s up to them. If they want to miss the due date and aim for a new one it’s their decision. If they act like you’re supposed to produce a magic trick to meet the same due date with no incremental, there’s a literal department called account management. If they’re incompetent & can’t do this, you just share the budget options and eventually they’ll make a decision. It’s not all on you and if your team is getting paid during all this drama, then it’s just work, who cares as long as the client pays for it. That says, it’s good to present options, it shows willingness to collaborate internally & also try to elevate the work.
You can do whatever you want as long as you pay for it. Time, scope or deliverables. It’s all doable as long as they’re willing to pay. If they aren’t, get fucked.
