Sometimes when I don’t answer immediately, a colleague might start telling me the details of what I need to do - because they think I’m lost, but in reality, I’m processing. So I ask, “Actually / I’m sorry, I need some time to think this through, and then can I come back to you with an approach later today?”
Would something like that work? You could add more details “I’m a very visual person, so it would be helpful for me to write / map this out first and then come back to you. Does that work with your schedule?”
This is incredibly helpful advise, your example here gives me another way to voice what I need! I’ll definitely be using this/next week. Thank you so much🙏.
The above advice is great.
I also rely on visuals to process information, so I need to write a lot so as not to rely on my memory. If ever you see me in a meeting and I’m not jotting something down it’s because I have no intention to do anything with the information - other than lend an ear to someone who wants to talk.
