How do you feel that the pandemic has impacted your clerkship?

It has made me enjoy it less because all my friends are WFH but my judge requires we work in-chambers (I significantly prefer WFH).

I’m WFH. Don’t get the same chambers experience. Definitely unfortunate to miss out on the interaction with judge and co-clerks on a regular basis.

This. I really feel like I’m missing out on a lot of great stuff. I clerked pre-pandemic and loved it. So many learning opportunities (trials and hearings to observe, etc.) and chances to interact with other clerks and judges. I returned to clerking mid-pandemic and boy is it different! In chambers only part time, with no opportunity to interact with anyone outside of chambers. Everything is telephonic or video. Trials keep getting pushed. 😩

Zoom is so time consuming and attorneys are so spoiled and needy via emails..

I ask myself this everyday. We have a secretary who does nothing

Generally less filings (Bankr. Ct.) but otherwise no impact. We’ve been coming in the office and the Judge makes sure we get an education on the law.

I have always been baffled by the GOP biggotry. Their hate basically have them shooting themselves in the foot, Puerto Rico would more than likely vote conservative, but because they are brown the GOP just hates them.

This year’s ROMBA felt underwhelming. Partying was ok, per usual, but the conference itself felt blah. Panels were mediocre, corporate events were cheap-ish, there weren’t enough senior people. Even hooking up was just twinks on twinks on twinks mostly (not into them, so choices were very limited). Is it post-covid, corporate cost cuts or something else?

Additional Posts in Law Clerks

Anyone else kind of bored clerking? I liked law school and thought I liked research and writing, but so far this district court clerkship has been pretty boring—lots of state law issues that are poorly briefed. Though to be fair, most of my time has been spent on one big case that I’m 99% sure is going to settle but not until the eve of trial bc that’s plaintiff’s counsel’s m.o.; so my work resolving the insane number of SJ and Daubert motions seems like a waste of my time.

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?

Thoughts on the length of notice to give your judge that you’re leaving? Pertinent facts: I’ve been there a few years as the second clerk, and they would still have their head clerk and third clerk.

As someone who is interested in public interest law (open to impact litigation or policy work), does it make sense to clerk in state court -- trial level -- and if so, for how long? Are these clerkships only useful for becoming a state court judge down the line or can they open doors to other paths?

The question is, is graduation from law school, not minimum competency? With this line of reasoning we are saying that law schools do not produce competent future lawyers, so should we instead switch to a system of taking the bar without the three years of a measure that frankly bar associations have deemed not an adequate measure? Dash this comment aside if it is fallible, but there is something here that has been overlooked. Competence is not regurgitation and memorization.

Ive been practicing in TX for 2-3 years at a big law firm doing mostly bankruptcy work (and some trial) and looking to clerk at a bankruptcy court in SDNY/DDE/EDVA (I am well aware of how great the SDTX judges are but I am set on leaving Texas). Anyone familiar with how many apps these judges normally get or what makes candidates stand out? Are these judges generally not interested in someone who has practiced in a different market?

Some attorneys have told me to use my two years of clerkship as professional experience to not start at a law firm as entry level and this makes sense if I go into litigation, but I’m wondering if I can use my clerkships as leverage for corporate too. Any thoughts?

Question for career/long-term clerks. Do your courts have parental leave policies? Mine doesn’t have a policy. Curious what others have or don’t have. This is not including FMLA. I mean something separate from that.

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?
