It just comes with the territory when owning watches with higher-end mechanical movements. If you want to save in this area, you could choose a mechanical from a brand with nice finishing but a more reliable/easily serviceable movement (ETA), or a high-end quartz like a Grand Seiko - 9F quartz has a 50 year service interval! (but 3 year battery change)
I’m okay with the value proposition of high end mechanical movements, since they’ll last your whole life as long as you take care of them with a service every 5-10 years. This breaks down a little if you are buying mechanical watches in the <1000 range since the cost of a service could be most of the cost of a whole new watch
ETAs run like nothing else. I got a Steinhart with an ETA 2824-2 seven years ago. Zero services later, it still isn't losing time
Rolex service interval is now 10 years. That’s pretty spectacular... annualized, that’s less than $100 a year. Definitely worth it to own this badass watch.
