How do you get back into interview mode after staying at home for years? Continued in comments.

You need to hire someone professionally. I would do that even if you were not coming from a position where you took a couple years off to stay with your family. For example, I recently moved from big law to in-house and I use a career advisor type person and then also a professional résumé writer and the career advisor did so much prep with me for interviews. Even though I hadn’t really interviewed in over 10 years I actually feel like I was nailing things and I found my dream and house position in less than three months. But I really don’t think I could’ve done that without hiring outside Help.

If you’re not working with a recruiter, it might be helpful to connect with one to get advice and interview tips! One who’s very experienced and plugged into your market may be able to tell you which firms are more likely to hire someone who has been off work for a couple years.

I would practice with a trusted friend and mentor who can give you honest feedback.

I stepped away from Biglaw two years ago to focus on my family. I’ve decided to practice again but I’m blowing my interviews. Prior to taking my break, I would say I was an excellent interviewer. My brain just isn’t firing as quickly as it used to. All of my interviews to date have been in-house but I have an interview with a V10 firm next week, any tips?

It can take time for some people to hit their groove. You said you are blowing your interviews, what are you doing wrong in your assessment?

like

Practice practice practice! I’ve found that pretending to respond to interview questions with my spouse, even over our children’s squeals has been helpful for building confidence

These are muscles that you haven’t used in awhile. Being a professional is a skill like any other than you haven’t been honing. Maybe consider some heavier pro bono work to get back in the professional saddle for a few months before you jump into the deep end.

Great idea!

Accept every interview you get offered even if it’s for a ridiculously low paid salary. Apply very broadly and widely even for jobs you think you don’t want that might not even be in your geographic area or preferred location if you’re open to the idea of moving. Small law, mid law, big law, in-house, compliance… everything.

To the extent that you have the ability try to get as much practice as possible, please do… you get the best practice by interviewing for jobs that you don’t want. If you see an in-house or firm job that pays horrible pay please interview anyway even if you know you’d never accept. You never know if they come in and offer more because I’ve had that happen and either way it’s good practice because you interview the best when you don’t care about the outcome. I once got a huge title bump above what was being advertised and a huge pay bump because they liked me and I have sometimes come out ahead of what the salary range was advertised when it got to the offer stage.

Also try to take some temporary or temporary permanent jobs because that’s how a lot of people who have a gap get back into employment and sometimes you get hired full-time at the place. It also helps you to have more recent work history.

Practice using ChatGPT or another AI and tell it “you are a career coach specializing in (insert field).” Tell it to prep you for the interview and give it a copy of the job description and a copy of your résumé and work with it for a few days before each interview. After you’ve done enough interviews instead of it taking several hours to prepare for each interview it might take you 20 minutes.

Worried I just won’t get a look or judged too hard if I’m not coming from a top tier banking firm (messed up my summer internship and it’s haunted me since) - how much does that matter of prestige of bank vs the industry you’re working in and what’s the best advice in being able to go to HSW?

Round or exact numbers on banners/LPs? I was curious about this since in negotiations for example or pricing it's better to have the exact number. But if you have a case study, for example, is it better to say "Client X increased their revenue to 1,000,000 ARR" instead of "Client X increased their revenue to 987,500 ARR" ? Anyone has seen any impact on conversion rates?

Has anyone successfully moved capabilities? I work in Client Service Delivery and am aligned to PMO. CSD is a mix of PMO and SC but it seems like we do the same work for different pay.

Colleague has put in his resignation. They are offering him whatever he wants to stay including 4days a week work from home. He’s not bluffing and plans to leave. However, at this same time I was asked to begin working as a supervisor for the engineering team and I would get a promotion at the beginning of the year. I have been supervising and managing our team of 6 for months with no extra pay or bonuses. I was told yesterday that raises will be light this year. Yet today they spare nothing.
