How do you handle situations where a colleague takes credit for your work? I planned and implemented an event with 50+ people. My coworker made the flyer. That’s it.

Every time sometime brings up the success of the event she talks as if WE planned it, when it was 100 percent me. I’m so annoyed but don’t want to seem petty.

That would drive me crazy! But I guess if it happened to me I'd decide how to proceed based on who knows what. I mean, if my boss knew what I'd done, and someone else trying to take credit didn't matter, I'd just shrug it off. But if the other person was really trying to influence people whose opinion mattered, then I'd have to speak up. I guess it comes down to whether it's just some meaningless bragging or something more serious.

I'm facing something similar to yours. What I'm noticing is that when I do the work, our team lead says we did the work. It frustrates me. Yes, we are a team, but when I did 95% of the execution, I don't think it is fair to say that we did it. I think sometimes the fight isn't worth it. Calling them out might just create conflict in the team. But if it does become a pattern and it's impacting your work, then maybe bring it up.

At this point, it is too late for you to do anything about this past event. What you can do is learn from this. So the next you are working with this individual you can get ahead of her trying to take credit by making sure leadership is aware of your progress while setting up the event.

I'm right there with you. I tried to speak up twice and it ended up with me being thanked for doing the heavy lifting or organizing the grant instead of the actual work I did of inventing an entire program based on a vague idea, researching how to make it relevant and successful, getting the buy in of volunteers, and creating 90% of the budget for it.
It's very belittling to make it sound like I'd been the detail oriented secretary. This job is ending in three months though, so I'm giving up. I've felt belittled and sidelined for two years and am ready to move on.
