You have to stage a clever public spectacle announcing your departure. For the Gram.
Set your email auto reply to “new phone who dis“
Awkwardly stand outside your direct supervisor’s door while they wrap up a meeting. It will seems like it’s about to end three or four times before it actually does, so make sure to make a few false starts toward the door before shuffling back to where you were standing. Then finally poke your head in as they’re getting ready to grab lunch and ask if they “have a second”. They’ll know you either want a raise of to put in notice and will be visibly relieved to hear it’s the latter
Text your boss “we gotta talk"
Submit a typed letter of resignation to your supervisor in person preferably, and bring a copy of the letter just in case. Try to tie up as many loose ends as needed in the remaining few weeks. Fight the urge to say/do something you’ll regret later. Treat yourself to your favorite dinner and drink the night of your last day. Good luck!
Diss mixtape.
Definitely resign in person with two weeks notice. No email. Just walk into your manager’s office and ask to talk to them
Channel your inner Paul Simon. "There must be 50 ways to leave your agency"
“I’m taking my talents to ________"
Submit you two week notice formally to your hiring manager via email. They'll take you through the steps from there.
Also for real, bring in treats for your team. Let them know you're sad to be leaving but appreciate them. Even if you don't.
And don't get a vanilla on vanilla cake. That's just gross.
Realize you’ll end up in a better place. Give your notice in person to your direct supervisor. Then feel great about it.
Film the entire thing on Instagram live and then write a scathing Glassdoor review after the deed is done
schedule a “catch up” meeting invite with your hiring manager to tell them via phone or in-person first. once you’ve had the conversation, send them a thank you for catching up with your formal letter of resignation, including written 2 weeks notice.
Set a meeting on your calendar for 2 weeks from today and call it "First day at new job".
Label your boss as optional.
Depending on how formal your shop is, schedule a meeting with or just grab your managing creative and tell them you’re resigning. Say thank you for all the learnings and everything they’ve done, even if you don’t mean it. If they like you, they might ask if they can counter. Be honest if they can or cannot. Don’t drag it out longer than needed if you’re already set on leaving. You’ll then have to submit a formal resignation letter to HR which you can keep very short: I’m resining from agency name as a copywriter effective on date. Thank you. When you do your exit interview, be honest but don’t scorch earth. Some people might hype you up to “let em have it,” but bitch sessions are never helpful. Good companies try to learn from people who leave how to improve. If you have actionable notes, absolutely give them. Things like: communication could be improved by outlining to dos in an email I can reference instead of a walk by info dump. Your kitchen coffee sucks, try a new brand. It would be nice if younger creatives got more opportunities to present their work directly to clients to build those skills Things like that. Good luck at your new job!
Serious replies and jokes are all appreciated. Please keep them coming.
You send flowers to everyone and put little stink bombs in each vase. The ones that take 2 weeks to set off.
Write an email to every person who works at your agency.
2 weeks written notice.
