How do you spot toxic traits early at work? Before the big incidents, it’s often the small signs: deflection, vague feedback, gossip framed as concern, or discomfort when questioned. What early red flags have you learned to trust?

The sly comments about other members of staff and the push to work more and more hours without getting paid for it

The comments thing is crazy to me! That should never be something people experience in the workplace

You have answered your question I guess. All those are true

Observing the way people talk to one another during a work collaboration conversation. Noticing if feedback is helpful or if it's condescending and uncollaborative.

I agree, and seeing if there is tension between manager and team members

If people are jumping ship, that’s usually a sign. I had to learn the hard way that high turnover usually comes with a reason. Now, I always make sure to ask about turnover—tactfully—during interviews.

How do you tactfully ask this though? Definitely something I would want to know!

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

So my partner will be getting laid off 4/15. 🥺

Let the games begin, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Felt very guilty but I honestly wish I could be more honest and actually share with my manager about why I took a day off.
