How does everyone push against your company’s policies you don’t agree with? I was forced to reject a highly qualified candidate because he didn’t have a degree. He had way more experience than the other candidates I’ve been interviewing, and I think he would have been perfect for the role. But our policy is clear that a degree is required for this role, and my hands are tied, even though I know this policy is killing us.

I would take your concerns to your boss or whomever is above and say, I have the perfect candidate but you have to be flexible on some of the requirements if you really want what's best for the team

In this particular case, it’s usually straightforward to build and present a strong case to the VP and HR Business Partner of the function or business unit explaining why this candidate stands out compared to others interviewed, and to request an exception. I’ve encountered a similar situation before where we ultimately hired someone without the degree. We also revisited whether the degree was truly essential, and as a result, it’s now listed as “preferred” rather than required.

Yes, please push back on this policy! For UX, degree requirements mainly act as screening filters for Human Resources. You don’t need a degree for this field, but you do need to get your training somewhere along the way. Some of the most interesting and talented candidates I’ve seen come from parallel or different fields. They usually add different perspectives to the team and work.

Get with HR and update the policy. Make your case and show the value you lost! Everyone has a story behind them, maybe the candidate became a parent at a young age and could not go to college and worked to support the new family. It just shows a degree is not necessary and it’s used to eliminate a class of people vs inclusion.

This is a tough place to be in- I wonder how this would affect other employees if this precedent was broken

I honestly struggle with the politics of Afghanistan. It does appear that after 20 years we leave and within months it goes back to very similar or on its way. It’s not the US job to be the world police we did try to build coalitions and fail at the end of the day unless we’re willing to keep troops there forever which most Americans don’t want to I am not sure what the right thing to do is. And I’m sick of criticism just for the sake of the president. I don’t think there’s a perfect solution
