How hard is it to lateral to a firm (not Kirkland of course) and become a partner that way? Do you need to show them your current book of business? I know most firms have hard requirement of how long a lateral associate has to stay to make partner, can you negotiate that down at the offer stage?

Very hard unless there’s a niche need or unless you have a book. Firms are overflowing with capable super seniors

Why not Kirkland?

OP seven figure nsp isn’t as common as one hopes and def is not the norm at any big law firm. I have friends with nsp titles in top 10 not making that as base. KE pays higher in many situations bc they have the resources if they want the talent. If they didn’t, people wouldn’t make the move. The exclusivity piece is laughable imo (though understand it too) bc with the amount of firms making nsp ranks, the title itself has become less “prestigious” - thought it’s a far better title than anything else for BD. I’d say M&A and CapM has its own world at times. How many years of experience did your friends have when they left? More than 10?

In my practice area, making it to KE is unheard of as I’m not their core work. It’s also just as unheard of to make it to top 5. From what I know, the comps packages we got are quite high.

At the end of the day, it’s a numbers game. The folks I know who left Kirkland didn’t always get more where they went to.

But, taking a step back, if we’re talking about choosing between which top 10 firm one joins, it’s a privileged position either way (and i mean that in a good way).

Anyone here deal with Phantom Share Agreements? Would that be in the wheelhouse for an ECVC lawyer? My BIL is being offered a job with a company and received a proposed phantom shares agreement. One condition states that he must remain in good standing with the company even after the 3 year vesting period to receive distributions. Is that atypical?

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

I actually love it. I was a paralegal in BL during law school. Maybe I am use to the environment? What am I missing? Help me remove the rose colored glasses. Sure there are partners/senior associates that don’t respect you or your time. That happens everywhere and would mean you need to move firms or sections. What am I missing?
