Got really lucky and friends from undergrad crushed it and became serial entrepreneurs. Also a few ibanker friends starting to source deal flow. The network is the greatest asset. You get one friend that you do solid work for and then he/she refers others.
The move was threefold: (1) I was working biglaw hours in a regional market for half the pay (am now on DPW scale); (2) as you alluded, I needed access to more specialists for certain deal types, more partner oversight for certain industry types, and an overall increase in resource quality; and (3) the prior firm paid blackbox year-end fee sharing on my origination, whereas the current firm has a very open/predictable formula for fee sharing and pays out a pay cycle or two after the client pays the bill (so I basically get paid when the firm gets paid for work I originate, which is nice).

If you mean work for clients the firm didn’t previously work for, I’ve never met an associate at a biglaw firm with any meaningful book. I’ve met a few who had family connections but that was very limited. I’ve actually met very few partners who had transportable business (despite claims that they were “rainmakers”).
Really depends on practice group
Almost all my work comes from identifying litigation matters for existing corporate / RE clients in my niche areas of litigation. The same was true as a senior associate, when I started to run litigation matters myself. It’s the conflict shadow more than the rates that is the problem for me. By targeting existing clients I can avoid that issue.
