I found working with a stylist really helpful. First she asked me to share a Pinterest board of what styles I was drawn to, and we also discussed my lifestyle and wardrobe needs. Then she went through my existing wardrobe, discussed what did and didn’t work, suggested what pieces were missing, and suggested what colors, cuts, and trends would work best for me. That made my shopping trips more successful and extremely efficient, and 10 years later I’m still using her advice. These days, my stylist occasionally helps me with event styling (especially for instances where I know a lot of photos will be taken) — we work virtually, I send her photos of options, and she advises what works best and how best to style it.
Yes, it can be pricey... expect a few hundred dollars per session (plus the cost of clothes), but the time and money saved on “fashion mistakes” made it worth it for me. Like you said, even a short stint (just one session) can be hugely beneficial.
How does one go about finding a good one?
I found working with a Stylist to be super beneficial to me. So much so that I finished styling certification too, to further learn and be able to help others too.

I went through Nordstrom and I enjoyed the process. I learned so much about different brands and fits, cuts, styles and pairing that I otherwise wouldn’t have ever really looked at. The fits my stylist has helped me put together for big in person meetings was a tremendous confidence boost and I am really happy I did it. They pull a tailor in during the session and do your fittings right there as well to leave the appointment with everything fitting proper to you.
My biggest scruple about the process (particularly Nordstrom) is they want you to spend $$$$$ and I felt a weird guilt / shame?? For not being a high dollar client. I think there’s some psychology in it thay the stylists do— mentioning their big clients that drop $10k in a sitting, etc. If you can have the confidence to stand your ground and not be bothered that you have a budget and they’re gonna want you to spend more than it’s worth a visit.
