If you were part of a layoff it's nothing to be ashamed of. It happens. There are situations where entire departments just get vaporized. Just describe what happened, say your division was halved or whatever it was that took place. Most hiring managers don't live in a bubble, so if you say you worked for company x and you were laid off it's conceivable they'd heard of the layoffs already.
I can help with a referral
My whole department and a few executives were laid off end of December to outsource in India and I used to say I was employed with a temp agency and the assignment ended but now I say restructuring that impacted my whole department after seeing it on LinkedIn and still nothing has planned out, totally following this. At least I get unemployment but it's only going so far.
I feel like with all the major layoffs happening its way more common now and not the red flag it used to be. No shame in being part of a numbers game. I’ve found being upfront takes the awkwardness out and actually builds trust. The right places won’t hold it against you, they’ll just move on to what you bring.
When was it ever a red flag? layoffs happen all the time, not even just departments or whatever large groups/sections. Is it the idea that the weakest performers are laid off when not an entire department or whatever? Because often it's the highest paid which are often the best performers who get laid off for budget reasons. Maybe there's something I'm not aware of.
I agree with Credit Analyst 1. As someone who does interviews often, I see lots of people who have been laid off. I never think of it as a red flag because mass layoffs are happening everywhere and its not peoples fault when they get laid off. I would just be honest about it if it gets brought up.
You can be honest and strategic. Say you were part of a broader layoff, explain how you’ve used the time to grow, and focus on what you bring to the table now. Framing matters more than the fact itself.
I'll dress it up to the best of my abilities, but at the end of the day, they're going to find out one way or another. No need to tapdance around the fact IMO, layoffs happen all the time and are nothing to be ashamed of.
