How honest are you in interviews when you don’t know a specific tool (like Marketo, GA4, or HubSpot) but know the general concept? Do you say “I’ll learn it on the job,” or does that feel too vague? Not sure what level of humility vs confidence seems to land best with hiring managers.

I would never outright lie and say I know a platform that i've never worked on. I would say something like "I have experience in SFMC but never worked with Hubspot. I'm a quick learner on tech stacks and am confident that they are similar enough the learning curve would be easy."

like

If it’s something I could learn before starting the job I will say I have worked on some projects in the tool before.

like

I'm 100% honest because when the role truly requires fluency with the tool, my performance may suffer if I'm not at that level.

That said, many job descriptions will ask for familiarity or fluency with marketing automation tools like Marketo, Eloqua, or HubSpot. Or project management tools like Wrike, Workfront, or Asana. So, if the hiring manger asks about a specific one I haven't used or haven't mastered, I talk about what I have mastered and discuss how essentially similar the software tools will be to accomplish the essential functions they need. (Here's where knowing *about* the tool in question really matters.)

Questions about martech tools tend to really be about whether the candidate will need extensive training to be able to do the job. So, if you've used a similar tool, most decision makers will feel confident the answer is "no," and move on to fundamentals and the results you've achieved in prior roles with other tools.

No one should fail to hire a carpenter because she's most recently used Stanley tools instead of Estwing.

If a hiring manger does that, I'd consider it a potential red flag.

like

I'll take some creative liberties as long as I have a baseline level of familiarity with the tool in question. I'm far from a GA4 wizard, but I know enough to speak somewhat intelligently on the subject. If it's something I'm entirely unfamiliar with, I'll say that but follow up by mentioning my familiarity with a similar tool to show I at least understand the basic concepts.

I agree with the comment above. I would never lie in an interview because they will find out. I find it best to be straightforward and honest.

I am confused mainly cause the tech stack requirement is similar to my role in the company.

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!
