Based on some of my colleagues, a long time.

In a busy practice group, you can last a really long time. You won't make partner and up and out firms will start pushing you out when that's clear. If your practice group is slow though, you could be on the chopping block pretty quickly.

Depends on what aspects you’re mid at. If you are producing mid work you can last a very very long time. If you’re mid (or worse) at the more administrative aspects of this job as a junior, in my experience you do not last long.

like

Definitely can vary a lot! And in my experience, those that have been told they should be looking elsewhere are told that right around the transition to midlevel. So they definitely still made it a while.

What is the definition of being mid by BL standards? It is my dream to find a firm and group where I can coast by being mid.

Truly. I’m considering lateraling downward in hopes of putting in average instead of Herculean efforts into everything.

Forever from what it seems

like

You can fail upwards for a very long time. Longer the worse in the V100 you are.

funny

Fail upwards you must.

Depends. I’m mid and it was fine until i ran into the combo of a slow-ish group and a personality clash with a partner

like

same applies for any company or employer. management needs to like you and your company needs to be profitable

Through at least 8th year apparently

If the firm is not making enough money for its equity partners, you will be on the list to push out first. In this economy, you might not want to be on this list.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? Would it look bad on my resume?

When you meet with a partner for a new assignment. Do you bill for that time? I’m a new associate, so I don’t know. On the one side it seems that meeting and conferring for an assignment requested by the the client would be billable since it’s using firm time and resources. On the other side, we are just talking about how to tackle the assignment and not tackling the assignment itself.
