Jamie Engelmann at VB&P is a repeat offender.
I’d rather quit than revise this agreement.

I'm 27 and just started contributing more. Currently I have $36K overall in 401k and Roth 401K, but I have started contributing $1500 a month to Roth 401K and $543 per month to Roth IRA. I'll pay the taxes now so I don't have to in retirement. What do you guys invest in? Right now I have VOO for the Roth 401K and FXAIX for the Roth IRA.

7 years. $100k 401(k), $24k roth, 104k in stocks/index funds/high yield savings for house. Would like to have more but feel on track for retirement, but not house.
104k is more than enough to purchase a house
$145k in 4.5 years for my regular 401k and $33k in my Roth
11 years. $430k which includes 20k in the invested portion of my HSA and $45k from my wife’s retirement account. She has been a stay at home mom for the past 4 years and is a little younger than me, so has not contributed much (financially!) to retirement accounts.
4 years - 68k 401k, 42k Roth IRA, 18k HSA
Been contributing for a little over 7 years. Current 401(k) balance is about $275k, but that doesn’t include the post-tax amounts and growth that have been rolled into my Roth IRA via MBDR.
I was curious so I looked at my breakdown of contributions and how much rolled into the Roth IRA:
- Total contributions: ~$177k
- Total rolled into Roth IRA: ~$53k
I’ve been aggressive with the amount I’m saving, doing 17% right now. Currently planning to contribute up close to the 415(c) limit of $70k this year. It’s amazing how much you can save via tax-advantaged accounts.
Question for people who have done a 401k rollovers after switching jobs - did you roll your old 401k into your new employers plan or did you roll it over into an IRA? If you went with the IRA, which investments did you choose?
I have about $70k from my previous employers 401k plan that I’d like to rollover into an IRA because it offers a lot more investment options, but trying to figure out which funds/allocation I should go with.
D1 which fund(s) did you move it into? Like I mentioned above, right now I still have most of it sitting in the S&P (plus some in FID small/mid caps). Obviously the goal with moving it into an IRA would be to pick funds that will outperform those ones, preferably with low expense ratios

3 Years - just broke 100k! Feel like I’m doing well, wish I could be doing better, but I do have a lot of bills (debt) I still have to payoff. So hopefully when those things are paid off, I can be even more aggressive!
380k in 401k only, 10 years - starting contributing since year 1 but started maxing 5 years ago
8Y- 140K 401K, 16K stock/bonds funds, used to have 65K additional funds that used to buy house. Started maxing out 2 years ago.
33 years, including 8 years of investing in the federal government thrift savings plan that was rolled into my 401(k) - $2.8M plus $239K in IRA/Roth IRA, plus $42K in HSA, plus $20K in series I bonds, plus $474K in HYSA.
I did a mega back door Roth a few years ago when Congress was threatening to eliminate it. Timing was actually horrible because I invested in a fund that had great performance the previous 10 years but tanked shortly after I transferred the funds, losing over $100K. It has rebounded since then, but not completely.

5 years, $74k
Sorry all they asked how long you worked not how old you are. I’m 49! Lol!
Can I still contribute to Roth IRA if I make $170k?
Potentially, might have to do a back door Roth if your plan allows
11 years and hit $550k after losing a ton when the economy tanked. However, I live modestly and travel instead of having a big house and fancy car. Hoping to retire early...I do contribute 12% plus whatever my employer matches.
15 years working, $570k in firm retirement accounts, $20K HSA, $30K Roth IRA….not including husband’s retirement accounts, cash and investments, and equity in home.
since I was 17 and 700k or so.
Almost 30 years $1.4 million in 401k/profit sharing and $33k in hsa. I maxed out by the time I was a senior and kept it up. Promotion to MD really accelerated the balance because of required profit sharing max and keeping up with max 401k and catch up when I hit 50. I probably could have done better with returns but stayed with age targeted funds.
Started hsa about 5 years ago
