I'm 27 and just started contributing more. Currently I have $36K overall in 401k and Roth 401K, but I have started contributing $1500 a month to Roth 401K and $543 per month to Roth IRA. I'll pay the taxes now so I don't have to in retirement. What do you guys invest in? Right now I have VOO for the Roth 401K and FXAIX for the Roth IRA.

I’ve been contributing to my 401(k) for about 4 years now and my balance is just under $30,000. I try to put in about 8% of my salary each month, plus the company match at 5%. I feel like I’m making progress, but I know I’ll need to be more aggressive to hit my retirement goals

like

Keep maxing out your 401k each year that you can, and invest aggressively in your younger years. By your 50s, you will likely have several million in your 401k. My biggest regrets are not starting to contribute sooner and not being more aggressive in my 20s and 30s. I'm telling you because I wish someone would have told me.

likesmarthelpful

Yes, and it still works. I'm mid 50s, started saving in my mid 20s (started late, as I had school to pay off), and have a few million in my 401k. The nice thing is once you max out 401k and HSA, you have the ability to make other investments (with no yearly cap on amounts). That's the stage you want to get to. My other investments exceed the amounts I have in the retirement and HSA accounts.

I maxed out contributions from 2014 to 2024, so that’s $219,500. Previous jobs didn’t max out, probably about $25k total contributed. My current work matches 85% of what I contribute, and the rest are gains.

~3.5 years, 100k (split 75/25 traditional and Roth) plus another $70,000 in a Roth IRA, and $60,000 squirreled away in a more conservative mix in an individual brokerage to buy a house.

I feel ahead of where I need to be but behind of where I wanted to be if that makes sense.

like

Honestly, it was tough my staff 1 year and we didn’t eat out much, but by staff 2 year I had some spending money. Put every dollar of my PBB into Roth/house fund except for when I was promoted to senior (I splurged and got my self a lightly used Omega watch to celebrate).

I’d say now we spend maybe $350 a monthly on groceries (we’re both Vegitarian’s so we’re fairly cheap). We split all of our other expenses down the middle so we’ve always been fairly secure after the first year. This year we even went on two international and one domestic vacation (mostly on good Amex Point Transfer deals).

I’ve been contributing for 5.5 years and have about $100,000 in my 401(k). I actually have a goal to maximize it, but I’ve never really taken the time to sit down and plan it out

like

I’ve been contributing since I became eligible to do so about 5 years ago. I have a little over 50K in there now. I recently increased my contributions because I felt a little behind. Realistically I’m on track, I just want to make sure I have more than enough.

like

About $100k and it’s been almost 5 years. I should’ve started the Roth sooner (only opened it in 2023)

like

401k just under 7 years - 230k total (165 trad/65 Roth).
HSA just under 3 years - 18k total
HYSA - 120k total
Currently 29 in NY. Feel like I’m in good shape for retirement. HYSA would be for home purchase, compared to the average American I’m probably ahead but I still feel behind because of the cost of homes in my area

like

you don't have at least 1 home yet? you're almost 30. you need property to be taken seriously.

About 2.5 years, 16k in 401(k). Only contributing company match. Some in Roth but only recently started contributing to that

Started contributing whenever I was eligible can’t remember when that was exactly maybe around 20 but I’m 29 now. Took some money out of the IRA recently to help with house down payment.

401k = $81k
IRA = $9k

Compared to the average American I know I’m doing pretty decent but considering the average American is broke I do still feel behind.

I’m 28, working 6.5 years, I have 130k in Roth and 35k in HYSA. Working on adding to my HYSA. Currently putting 8% in Roth. I thought I was doing OK but clearly a brokey compared to this sub

I had a baby almost a year ago. I should start a 529 account for my child but I am originally from France which also makes her a French citizen and she could easily go to college in France for not much money. It’s pretty much free there, I have 0 Student loan debt. With that in mind, a 529 would not be super helpful if we go that route. Should I consider other options? Do you have suggestions? Thanks so much!

How did you ramp up into doing actual data science work at your clients?

I am early in my career (3 YOE), but I have a masters degree, cloud data science certs, and strong Tableau/Alteryx experience. However, it seems like a lack of experience doing actual data science client work is what keeps blocking me from landing on data science projects. Any tips?

Hi all, was hoping for clarity on offers from FANG/Tier 2 tech I received recently. Base pay is still within range of 130-150K, but equity components have dropped dramatically. For reference, for similar positions, I was receiving grants of 150K - 200K over 4 years for data analyst positions (4-5 YOE) in Aug’21-Feb’22. For personal reasons, I did not accept these offers. Now the equity grants are coming in like 50-70K over 4 years. Is this market wide for non SWE/PM roles due to stock market?
