How many hours do you bill before asking for help or trying to get some of your work assigned to another associate?

I start offloading at 200hrs. I’m not giving quality work at 250+ and would likely be blowing deadlines, so it’s best for all involved to flag it.

like

Those are some stupid high numbers

like

Yeah, I start off-loading way, way before those points. If I’m hitting like 220, it’s a bad month and I might need some help soon.

like

When I stop being able to meet deadlines consistently and I know that my colleagues are not nearly as busy or are looking for hours. Sometimes that means at around 220/mo, sometimes that's only around 200/mo.

like

It depends on if there’s an end in sight. If it’ll be a 300 hour month, but four deals are closing and then have nothing on the horizon, I’d probably suck it up. If it’s looking like multiple 300 hour months, ask for help.

like

Agree with this. Needs to be a sustained period.

like

When I’m otherwise going to start fucking things up. That’s not at a set number of hours. Depends if I’m being asked to switch between too many matters; if the other people on my matters can pick up slack/be relied on to cover if I’m unavailable for a few hours on another matter; if my boyfriend is in town and distracting me; etc.

like

280 with line of sight to 320+

like

No that’s way to much. More than 200 in back to back months makes me consider asking for help.

If I’m hitting 70 hours a week consistently (not like 1-2 bad weeks) or I can’t feasibly make the deadlines I’m being asked to make *and* I know others at my class year are slower I’ll ask to move the work or get more support. We have a central staffing system for a reason

A lot haha

Had an epiphany recently.

Why do I work so much?

It’s because I have little family and few, if any, friends. Had a rough childhood. My way of making an impression on others has always been through work.

By working, I do something I’m good at and makes people appreciate me, while covering for my loneliness and feeling of inferiority. It’s sort of the only thing holding me afloat.

When I’m probably never going to have friends or a family of my own, becoming partner is the next best thing.

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Like is there a perception of us being a step down or ancillary to the big leagues of NYC or not? There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think? Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
