how much do certifications actually matter for landing tech jobs right now? I’ve been debating whether to spend money on AWS and Google certs while unemployed but I can’t tell if they genuinely help or if companies mostly care about direct experience instead.

I prefer real world experience over a "cert" collector. If you have both, then it's a win. Just a cert, I pass on that resume. Times are tough, I need to hire experience, not a trainee.

Exactly. We all know that guy who's getting a new cert every month. They're obviously using practice exams to quickly pass the tests without having the experience to back it up. Certs look good on a consulting firm's portfolio but they're not a true indicator of skill.

I got my CCNA for basically free from my University. I then got my CCNP a few years later once I got more familiar with Network Infrastructure. I initially got my Full Stack certification AFTER I had years of experience.

Coming from a freelance background, I thought they would help me but I don’t think they did. Ultimately, it was my background and knowledge that did it. That said, I might have gotten more calls because of the certifications. No way of knowing for sure since I did most of my applications after getting some certs, but not one interviewer even asked about or mentioned them.

Asking advice from a recruiter: I’ve been recently laid off :( This week I took some time to reflect, talk to friends and family. I want to be more thoughtful on my next move and although interviewing right away would be logical I feel I want to take a break and some time for myself. Take a month or two off working and use that time to plan thoughtfully on my next move. Would having that gap in my resume be an issue when I go back to the job market?
