How much does your job align with what you studied in school? I’m realizing a lot of people I admire took pretty winding paths, and it’s making me question how locked in I really am. Would love to hear your experience.

What's making you question that? There are a lot of unconventional paths out there, each with its nuances and ‘in the right place at the right time’ scenarios. I went to school for this and had a more traditional path, but that isn’t necessarily ‘the way’ when other people bring in different experiences that help them see things differently.

I think it’s a mix of things. I’m happy in my role, but I’ve been hearing more stories from people who took unexpected turns and ended up doing really meaningful work. It’s made me wonder if I’ve been a little too focused on following a straight line, instead of exploring other paths that might be a better fit long term. Your point about different experiences helping people see things differently really resonates I’m starting to see the value in that more.

I started in language interpreting to international studies in school. The only reason I work in tech is because I worked in a computer lab in college and just kept asking questions to my more savvy folks.

Non-official networking has always been how I have learned if I could transition to another world or if I would even like it.

Keep an ear out for a potential mentor or sponsor who can see the world from a different viewpoint.
