Gripe: My art department gets an extra budget for materials, but science does not. Why!?

Each teacher at our school gets $275 for supplies for the whole year. Our art teacher gets an extra $500!

I get that art gets extra but not science? Bologna! I guess you aren't doing any labs with consumables? Have you asked administration about some money for science? They're not going to spontaneously give you money. Good luck.

Our science department decided to go away from using textbooks. The budget had a line item ever four years for new textbooks. We now get that textbook money to spend on science supplies. Something to try.

I dont even know if there is a budget for our school

Seems strange to me.

If the Science Department doesn't have the money for consumables I send the principal what I need and make him take from his principals petti cash fund. I do what the students do; if I need something and cannot afford it I ask administration. The worst they can say is no.

That is weird. We get about $200 each. Then, the science department gets about $2500.

Ask which portion of the standards they would like you to fund.

Exactly! Ask how they would like you to create these experiences.

Today's high point in my chemistry class: I am teaching Atomic theory and structure. I have my students look at their periodic table and I walk through the information listed for each element. At this point I talk about a lot of big ideas that are related as an prelude to where we are headed. One student told me that she took chemistry last year, and in 10 minute I was able to connect all of the pieces that never made any sense to her. Her 'aha's moment was like candy to me.

Hello. My district is currently remote (virtual) and I am teaching a chemical reactions unit. Usually, this is a hands on unit. I cannot do hands-on labs for equity reasons. My district does not have subscriptions to any science lab simulation sites at the middle school level. We use the NGSS. We are standards based grading and I can only grade the stand MS-PS1-2. Anyone have suggestions on free simulations I can use? I teach synchronously to my students 2 classes (2 hours total ) each week.

Our school uses Foss Kits for Science and I was told when students return, we will need to sanitize all items before and after each use. This doesn’t seem possible in a middle school setting where each period has a 4 minute break and 25 students in each period. What do you do in your classroom to minimize the amount of work needed to clean and sanitize items. I don’t want to short change the students’ hands-on experiences.
