I am in the same exact situation. Not sure what to do. I have done 3 smaller transactions and am facing one of that size. I am looking at bringing another advisor in to help. I feel that it will shore me up to deal with margin compression.
The type of risk depends on if it is a purchase of broker dealer clients or RIA clients. There's differences. The brokerage numbers stats should be easy to get from those in the home office. The RIA model has a bit more risk in purchasing and you should plan that over a minimum 3 years with current advisor. Culture you bring should very closely match current RIA or you risk losing a lot of clients.
There is always risk with every transaction, but it really comes down to the relationships that have been built by the seller and can they transfer that relationship. On average transition rates are really good in the financial services industry, with most being well over 90%. Things like how frequently they contact clients, how long they have had the clients, is there any staff that would come with the transition and how many things are changing on the client can all have an effect. The real issue is how do you adjust for that risk in the price you pay for the business or how you pay for the business. There are many ways to structure the payments to adjust for client attrition, some better than others.

Of course there is risk,... What crm notes exist what is the mix of fee vs commission,. What was good about previous purchases. What was negative. The fact your asking the question concerns me. What are your metrics?
Also, do you have the staff to service them? It’s not like collecting marbles...
How do you find these acquisitions? I’d love to acquire a smaller practice, but don’t know where to start?
In all 4 of mine ( the three small I have done and the pending large one ) the advisors all came to me. Not really sure how that happened.
